Pain control

Pain control… At McIndoe our main priority is to make sure your child is comfortable. Our specialists are always on hand to discuss any concerns you may have.

Your child will usually have pain killing drugs during their trip to theatre. On returning to the ward your child's pain will be regularly assessed. However, if your child has pain it is important to let the nursing staff know so that appropriate pain-killers such as paracetamol can be given.

These are usually administered by mouth but sometimes drugs need to be given via the cannula (the plastic tube which is used to give anaesthetic drugs) which is left in place after the operation for this purpose.

Your child may also need drugs to stop them from being sick. These are also given via the cannula.
