Sebaceous cyst (blocked sweat gland) & Lipoma (fatty lump) removal

Specialist treatment… Sebaceous cyst or Lipoma removal may be necessary if the area becomes painful or unsightly. At McIndoe our specialist skin consultants are dedicated to finding the best treatment to suit your individual needs.

How long will it take?

Most cysts and lesions can be removed in the minor operations room in the outpatients department. Both of these can be removed under Local Anaesthetic and takes about 30 minutes.

What can I expect?

Direct closure allows the cyst or lipoma to be removed and sutured.

The sutures are removed (if not dissolving) according to site of wound (e.g. back 10-14 days, arm 5-7 days, face 3-5 days).

Skin coloured surgical tape is applied for minimum 2 weeks to help support the scar.

The scar will need moisturising (with a bland moisturiser) and massaging for at least one month to help with the final result.

Minimal discomfort may be experienced which can be easily controlled with painkillers of your choice.

Bathing/showering is allowed so long as care is taken not to get the dressings wet.

Sun block should be worn for 18-24 months over the affected areas as it will be prone to burning.
